How It Works
When a child’s developmental needs conflict with the structure, pace, or expectations of their environment, it often creates confusing cycles of stressful crises. My expertise is in identifying and attuning to the interplay of factors at work in a child’s learning process. The purpose of my work is to facilitate the learning and skill-building processes that would increase a child’s chances of having more successful, self-led experiences in their social and academic worlds.
What does this look like in practical terms?
It varies a lot. Sometimes, it looks like in-person or remote sessions with the child. Other times, it means periodic meetings with parents or interviews with teachers. In some cases, I’ve been brought on as a homeschool teacher. Or it could mean something else entirely. It all depends on the unique circumstances of each situation and on what will best serve the child’s learning needs at each particular time.
What’s my process?
My first step is to gather information in order to construct a working model of the situation. This usually—but not always—involves regularly working with the child on relevant tasks. As I grow more familiar with the details of the child’s experience, I propose interventions to the child’s care team and attend to their implementation. Then, I monitor the outcomes and propose adjustments in order to guide results in the desired directions. All the while, I continue to review my observations to ensure that I remain as attuned as possible to the child’s needs as they evolve.
What’s my style?
My work style is rooted in authentic personal connection, clear communication, intention, patience, fact finding, and attentiveness to results. Parental collaboration is often an essential component, though the degree of involvement will vary.
Overall, I strive to maintain a balance between compassion, accountability, creativity, and pragmatism. With over a decade of practice working closely with a wide spectrum of kids and families, I develop strategies using insight and educational training that is shaped by years of experience and grounded in continual research review.
